14 Things You Understand if You’re a Mom
Moms know they are a different breed of people. Finely attuned to their child in a way that no one else is and intuitively wired to nurture, love and tend to them as they grow into adulthood, moms are just different. Here are 14 things you understand if you’re a mom.
1. You magically have all the answers.
To Mom:
- “Where’s my ball?”
- “I’m hungry.”
- “Can I…?”
- “I want to…”
- “Why are we…”
- “When is…”
To Dad:
- “Where is mom?”
2. You’d do anything for your kids.
It is a love like no other and moms know that feeling. You would do anything for your kids. You voluntarily hold our your hand for them to spit out their gum. You’ll even let them blow their nose on your shirt. Likewise, you wake up in the middle of the night if they need you and you are there for them no matter what.
3. Your purse is more than a purse (and it’s big too).
Your purse not only contains your wallet and keys, but all kinds of other essentials for you and the kids ranging from snacks to bandaids.
4. Elementary school homework is hard!
We’ve been there before but it’s different today and elementary school homework is simply hard. We Google for help.
5. Being alone feels weird (and wonderful, but still weird).
All moms wish for time alone and then, on the off chance that you get some time alone, it feels wonderful but weird. You are so used to having your children around you that the quiet solo time definitely feels strange.
6. Taking a shower is a luxury.
Some days, it just doesn’t happen and other days it doesn’t happen when you’d like. Still, other days, it doesn’t happen without being interrupted.
7. You fear that every other mother is doing a better job than you.
It’s easy to compare yourself to other moms and think they have it all together and you don’t. That is simply not true. We are all working our way through this, one day at a time. We are all making mistakes woven in with daily triumphs. Motherhood is messy.
8. You have the hearing of a German Shepherd.
When it comes to your kids, you can hear a pin drop a mile away. You hear every sneeze, every toss and every turn. Somehow the act of birthing a child, also births super-human-hearing.
9. Going to the grocery store alone feels like a vacation.
We moms love grocery shopping alone.
10. You can’t control things.
Trying to control things is tiring and pointless. Like your toddler’s tantrum when you’re out to eat or your teenager’s choice in style. You learn to go with the flow.
11. You are a hypomomdriac.
This condition is known by all mothers. You worry about your child. You worry a lot. You worry about things that have happened. You worry about things that haven’t even happened. You also worry whether you’re doing a good enough job.
12. Comfy rules.
Yoga pants are your favorite. You have plain ones and more “dressy” ones.
13. Mother’s intuition is real and very powerful.
You know things. You just do.
14. You can never get enough credit and that is okay.
Being a mom is a job that lasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It doesn’t pay in cash money, but it gives other much greater rewards.
